October 15, 2016 - We drove over to Banning today to attend the Malki Museum Fall Gathering. This event is held usually in October and features Native crafts and Cahuilla harvest foods such as wewish (acorn mush), which is a time-consuming but staple dish. The demonstrations today included Cahuilla bird singing and basket weaving. As always, the atmosphere of these Malki events is very calming to the soul. The food was very good; lots of beef, pork, rabbit, beans and steamed vegetables. We didn't have any rabbit, but we tried the acorn mush and decided that it's an acquired taste. |
