January 18, 2016 - One of our more interesting plants in the backyard is the Euphorbia Tirucalli plant, commonly called "Sticks-on-Fire." This brilliantly colored succulent develops its best hues during the short days of winter, provided it is grown in full sun. The origin is probably coastal Mozambique. This winter its color has been spectacular. A key difference between cacti and Euphorbias is the presence of leaves. However, the small leaves are fairly inconspicuous and soon drop. I should have taken these pictures a couple of days ago since all of the very small red leaves have now shriveled to a black color, or have fallen off completely. The "Sticks-on-Fire" plant is just one of nature's many miracles. |
