September 6, 2024 - Friday - Today we were back in Pomona, CA to visit AMOCA, the American Museum of Ceramic Art. Their latest exhibit is called "Architectural Pottery: Ceramics for a Modern Landscape," which explores the significant impact of mid-twentieth-century architecture and design on artists in California. Max and Rita Lawrence partnered with two student designers, John Follis and Rex Goode, and founded the Architectural Pottery company in 1950. Within twenty years, the company grew into a vibrant manufactory with a design line of several hundred products, including some of the most enduring forms in mid-century modernism.
Many pieces have nicknames, like "Peanut" below.
This "Bear" is precious.
This diorama recreates the look of the 1950's "modern home."
Before the museum we had lunch at VITA Italian Bar & Grill, also in Pomona.
Judy had their Caprese Sandwich with heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, basil, pesto sauce, and balsamic fig glaze on ciabatta bread. The French fries were unbelievably good.
I had their Arborio Saffron Risotto with paprika, pecorino and wild mushrooms.
Everything was wonderful!
