September 26, 2024 - Thursday - Today we were in Los Angeles to visit an old, historic hotel. The Hotel Figueroa, or "The Fig" is a hotel in the South Park district of downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 1926 by the YWCA, the hotel was established to provide a haven for professional women, allowing them to lodge without the requirement of a male escort. It became a gathering place for business women and for club women. Initially it catered exclusively to women, but later men had limited access to the building. The hotel is 13 stories high with 409 rooms and includes a coffin-shaped pool. The style has been described as Spanish Colonial or Mediterranean Revival architecture.
The lobby must have been grand when it first opened, but now the main restaurant, Cafe Fig, has taken over the entire lobby area.
The coffin shaped pool is now closed for the season.
There is artwork everywhere and there has been a lot of creative touches with accent pieces.
The elevator doors are pretty funky.
This is a private bar on the mezzanine level.
Trees cover the front of the building but the back has been decorated.
It's an unusual hotel. Many of the patrons lounge on their sofas for a relaxing place to remotely work.
For lunch at Cafe Fig, Judy had their "Blueberry Banana Buttermilk Pancakes" that were delicious.
I chose their "Fish Tacos" that were excellent with just the right amount of spiciness.
