July 15, 2017 - We were in Anaheim today for the Obon Festival sponsored by the Orange County Buddhist Church. Obon or just Bon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist-Confucian custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit their household altars. It has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as the Bon-Odori. It was all about food since the entertainment didn't start until 6:30 PM. A lot of plants were on sale including beautiful plumeria stalks for $2.00 each. The festival didn't start until 2:00 PM, so today we ate locally at Le Rendez-Vous Cafe in Colton. We both had their French toast combo plate with eggs, bacon and sausage. |
