February 24, 2019 - Sunday - We went to Cathedral City, CA today for the inaugural tour of the Agnes Pelton House. Agnes Lawrence Pelton (1881–1961) was a modernist painter who was born in Germany and moved to the United States as a child. A believer in numerology, astrology, and faith healing, Pelton’s abstract compositions propelled her into an esoteric world epitomized by the Transcendental Painting Group (1938-1942), a short-lived group that promoted abstract, non-objective art. Although Pelton received some attention during her lifetime, she has been relatively unknown within the field of American Art. The Agnes Pelton house, built in 1939, was the hub of an artists' colony in Cathedral City from the 1930's to the 1960's.
There are several murals on Chuperosa Lane next to the Pelton House. This one shows some of Agnes' artist friends who also lived in this area called "the Cove."
This is the front yard of the property which is now decorated with sculpture.
This is Simeon Den, co-owner with his partner Peter Palladino.
We loved the pool! It was small but very private and cozy.
There are many Pelton originals here at the museum.
The gentleman on the far right is Peter Palladino, the other co-owner, and he is the artist who has created all of the mosaics on the property.
The sit down, sunken bathtub is eye catching.
The back yard of the property is even more interesting than the front yard.
Before touring the Pelton House, we stopped at Lala's in Cathedral City for brunch. This family owned storefront is ideal for those in search of food with a side of fun. They specialize in waffles, crêpes and shakes.
We shared one waffle dish and one crêpe dish. The waffle dish is called "Montecristo" and it's a waffle filled with ham, Swiss cheese, turkey and a raspberry spread.
The crêpe dish is their "Breakfast Crêpe," which is a folded crêpe with ham, Swiss cheese, avocado and a sour cream sauce.
The food was both delicious and filling. It was another very pleasant adventure in the desert. |
