August 21, 2019 - Wednesday - Today we headed to the coast to see the South Coast Botanic Garden in the beautiful community of Palos Verdes Hills, CA. This 87 acre botanic garden, "The Jewel of the Peninsula," has more than 2,500 different species of plants from as far away as Australia, the Mediterranean, and southern Africa.
This "Living Wall" of succulents and ferns is very impressive.
On our way there, as we drove through Rancho Palos Verdes, we stopped to see the Wayfarers Chapel. Wayfarers Chapel, also known as both "The Glass Church" and "The Tree Church," is noted for its unique modern architecture and location on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Swedenborgian Church of North America and serves as a memorial to its founder, Emanuel Swedenborg. The church was designed by Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright) in the late 1940s and was built between 1949 and 1951. It is so beautiful that it took our breath away.
Since our adventure today covered a lot of ground, fitting in lunch was difficult, so we ordered some Subway sandwiches to go before leaving Redlands. Luckily we found some picnic tables at Point Vicente and we had a wonderful lunch, with cookies and chips, under the trees with the Pacific Ocean and the Point Vicente Lighthouse to keep us company.
