February 27, 2022 - Sunday - Today we drove over to Riverside, CA to visit the Sweeney Art Gallery in the UCR Arts Block. "The magic that happens when a photographer captures a precise moment in a performing artist’s life – on or off stage – or reflects the joy the audience experiences – is on view in Jazz Greats: Classic Photographs from the Bank of America Collection. The exhibition comprises 33 photographs by 15 photographers that date from the 1920s to the 1980s and portrays artists from varied genres in music and dance."
This 1927 portrait of George Gershwin was taken by Edward Steichen.
Miles Davis - 1959

Billie Holiday - 1955
John and Alice Coltrane - 1966
The Apollo Theater - 1950
Dizzy Gillespie - 1948
Jackie Gleason and Louis Armstrong - 1959
Dizzy Gillespie 1981
Louis Armstrong - 1953
I saved the best for last. This 1947 photograph shows Dizzy Gillespie mesmerized, spellbound, watching and listening to Ella Fitzgerald sing. It's unforgettable.
Before the exhibit we had lunch at the nearby Tio's Tacos.
I had my usual shrimp and garlic dish, which is great with their beans and rice.
Judy had a cheese enchilada with molé sauce and rice and beans.
It was a great lunch and a wonderful selection of photographs at the museum. |
